Founding principles

Independence

FitnessTest operates free from manufacturer influence and commercial bias. Results are determined solely by objective performance data.

Scientific Rigor

Evaluation protocols are grounded in biomechanical research and safety standards. Methodologies undergo annual peer review.

Transparency

Testing criteria, scoring, and processes are publicly documented. Brand relationships and funding are fully disclosed.

Quality Threshold

Products must achieve grade 4.0 or better (German 5-point scale, 1=best) for certification.

German 5-point scale: 1 is best, 5 is worst. Comprehensive score combines base score and category-specific expert score.

Only products with comprehensive score 4.0 or better may use the FitnessTest Certified™ mark. Scores 4.1–5.0 are not certified; full results are still published.

Standards

Our evaluation standard EFEI-02001 defines base score, expert score, and certification threshold.

Laboratory accreditation: FitnessTest maintains ISO 17025 accreditation (e.g. via DAkkS) for testing and calibration. Annual audits verify compliance.

Ethical testing guidelines

Conflict of Interest

Staff and board are prohibited from holding financial interests in fitness brands. External consulting must be disclosed and approved.

Sample Integrity

Products are acquired through anonymous retail purchase or verified production samples. Chain of custody is documented.

Data Protection

Raw testing data is retained for 7 years and available for peer review. Proprietary design information is protected.

Result Publication

Brands receive advance notice before publication. FitnessTest reserves the right to publish all scores to maintain credibility.

Governance & oversight

Testing protocols and scoring methodologies are overseen by an independent governance structure comprising scientific, safety, and consumer-protection expertise.

Annual transparency reports detail testing activities, funding, and methodology updates. Available for public review.
